Race Report by Bill Tomer:
The Lanier Speedway Bounty Series pounded the pavement at Lanier Speedway for the final time this season on Wednesday night. The championship was already claimed by Jeff Bye Jr., but the rest of the spots in the top 10 were up for grabs. 15 drivers signed in for the race, but only 14 made the call for the A-Main. The racing was clean and fast as there was only one caution for 5 laps throughout the 75 lap feature. This also caused only 7 of the 14 cars to finish on the lead lap.
Scott Rutherford claimed the pole this week with a blistering fast time of 14.043 seconds. Rutherford obviously corrected last week's handling issues.
The race began and Rutherford quickly jumped into the lead. Third qualifier Bye was able to get by 2nd qualifier Bill Tomer on the intial start and began immediately putting pressure on Rutherford. Bye was able to grab the lead on lap 11 and never looked back. Rutherford followed Bye closely for a number of laps hoping for a mistake, but the chance never came and Rutherford got caught up a little in traffic, giving Bye a cushion. Bye crossed the line first by the final margin of 2.607 seconds. Rutherford was second, followed by Tomer in 3rd. JD Reyes brought his car home in 4th. Thomas Mitteer finished 5th driving Tomer's backup car. Mitteer chose to park his Lanier car due to a horrible paint scheme. Derek Roeleveld made a strong showing finishing 6th. Last week's winner Richard Shomer brought his car home in 7th, the last car on the lead lap. Andy Laroe finished 8th followed by Britt Vanmeter in 9th and Joe Martinez in 10th.
Richard Shomer was running for the bounty this week. Shomer found coming from the back can be tough sledding with so many fast cars and could only make his way to 7th by the end of the 75 lap race.
Shomer's performance nets him the Hard Charger Award this week. Starting 14, Shomer passed 7 cars on his way to 7th. He almost had 6th but Roeleveld beat him to the line by .011 seconds for the position.
The Hard Luck Award goes to John Ellenburg this week. Ellenburg started 4th and was racing with Tomer for 3rd at one point, but he started sliding back and ended up finishing 11th, 2 laps down.
Second was obviously not the place to be in the points this season. Every person that ever held the 2nd spot missed at least one week. This week, Patrick Dawson was holding the 2nd spot in points and he failed to show up for Season Championships dropping him all the way to 9th in the final standings. As mentioned before Bye won the season championship. Tomer finished 2nd in season points. Rutherford, after missing three weeks at the start of the season, rallied all the way to third. Andy Laroe finished out his season fourth in the points followed by Britt Vanmeter in 5th. Thomas Mitteer grabbed 6th in the final point standings followed by Chris Torres in 7th. Chad Needham fulfilled his season goal of a top 10 points finish by grabbing the 8th points position. Dawson was 9th followed by Chad Lang in 10th.
